Morning, MK 👋

Welcome to everyone joining us this week.

Milton Keynes has made the final four to become UK City of Culture 2029 - putting us up against Blackpool, Sheffield and Wrexham for one of the biggest cultural titles in the country.

Elsewhere, £100,000 is going into some seriously clever research involving MK’s super-sniffing dogs, a Newport Pagnell favourite finally has a reopening date, and a new community is helping local dads connect.

Then there’s the weekend: 100+ independent makers, 24-hour pickleball, grassroots live music, an after-dark museum, free running, Halloween magic and plenty more.

And because Bonfire Night is almost here, we’ve done the digging and rounded up six fireworks displays worth knowing about.

Let’s get into it. 👇

IN THE LOOP
The stories worth knowing

MK is in the final four

Turns out we might be more than roundabouts and concrete cows after all. Milton Keynes has made the final shortlist for UK City of Culture 2029, alongside Blackpool, Sheffield and Wrexham.

The shortlist was whittled down from nine places, and simply reaching this stage guarantees MK at least £125,000 to take elements of its bid forward.

Win the whole thing and the prize fund is £10 million - alongside a year in the national cultural spotlight and the potential for hundreds of events, new investment and a sizeable boost for local arts, tourism and businesses.

For some context, Bradford’s 2025 programme included more than 6,500 events, over 80% of them free. The judges will now visit all four finalists before the winner is announced in early 2027 - which happens to be the year Milton Keynes celebrates its 60th anniversary.

Quite the birthday present if we pull it off.

MK’s super-sniffing dogs could help build an electronic nose

Some seriously interesting research is happening on the outskirts of Milton Keynes.

Medical Detection Dogs, whose research and training headquarters are in Great Horwood, has received £100,000 from Jo Malone CBE and her husband Gary Willcox for a new piece of technology called SniffSpace.

The charity already trains dogs to detect the tiny changes in odour associated with conditions including cancer. SniffSpace will allow researchers to collect much more detailed information about how the dogs make those decisions - helping scientists understand exactly what they’re detecting.

The longer-term aim is particularly clever: use what the dogs teach researchers to help accelerate development of an electronic nose capable of identifying diseases earlier.

Malone has been an ambassador for Medical Detection Dogs for almost a decade. Turns out one of MK’s more remarkable research projects has four legs and a considerably better sense of smell than the rest of us.

QUICK LOOP
Worth knowing, quickly

👍 MK Dads Club is building a community for local fathers

Created after founder Luke experienced postnatal depression, MK Dads Club brings dads, step-dads, grandads, expectant fathers and father figures together through walks, social events and awareness sessions. The aim is simple: help men connect, talk openly and feel less alone in fatherhood. They’re also hosting a free men’s suicide awareness evening on 12 November, with an open conversation around recognising the signs and supporting those who may be struggling.

🎨 A Newport Pagnell favourite is coming back

After being forced to close when a car crashed into its High Street premises in July, pottery-painting café Kilning Me Softly finally has a reopening date. The business will welcome customers back on Saturday 7 November, after months of repairs to the building and equipment. Just in time to start painting those questionable homemade Christmas presents.

☕ A workspace by week, coffee spot by weekend

Olney Workspace is trying something different from this Saturday. When the laptops go away for the weekend, it’ll start opening to the wider public for coffee and pastries, kicking things off on 31 October with £2 coffee from Buckinghamshire roaster Doe & Fawn. Coffee sales at the launch will also support local charity Ailsa’s Aim.

🧩 A new free platform for SEND families

A Milton Keynes mum has launched SENDBridge, a free online space designed to make life a little easier for parents and carers of children with special educational needs and disabilities. It brings together trusted resources, local and national support, sensory tools and a community where parents can connect with others going through similar experiences - all in one place. There’s also support for keeping track of appointments and referrals, with a mobile app planned too.

🏐 Ever tried korfball?

MK Youth Korfball is running two free taster sessions for children aged 6-8 and 9-13 at Ousedale School in Newport Pagnell. Korfball mixes elements of basketball and netball, with boys and girls playing together in mixed teams. The sessions are open to all abilities and are designed for complete beginners too. They run Tuesday 3 and Tuesday 10 November, 6-7pm.

🔥 The seriously big bonfire

SAT 7 NOV · 3-8PM · BLACKPIT BREWERY, NEAR STOWE

If you’re happy to venture a little outside MK, Blackpit takes the bonfire part rather seriously. Every year the team creates an enormous handcrafted bonfire sculpture. Previous creations have included a rocket, hawk, dragon and giant rising sun. This year’s design is still under wraps. Add professional fireworks, independent street food, a bar and family entertainment and this is probably the most theatrical option of the lot. Tickets are £19.50 adults, £5 children aged 5-12 and free for under-fives.
